Not Progress
This is classic. First, I have no issue with progress. But this ad published by a company I won’t name misses on all counts. Moving from $7.00 to $7.25 a) is required by law since 2009 when the federal minimum wage was last raised and b) is hardly progress when the living wage in nearly every state (not to mention city) is double that or more. The ad also plays into the fable I still hear too often that money isn’t the most important part of a job. Well, if you aren’t making a living wage and you can’t pay your bills or invest in your future, money is the only part of a job that matters.
Hard to believe this ad made it through any kind of approval process at a company that actually helps people get jobs.
A few comments on Linked In asked me why I wouldn’t name the company. The reason is that this rhetoric is not limited to the company that published it. There are too many employers to list that try to convince others that wages are not the most important consideration in retaining productive and fulfilled workers. Until a worker achieves a livable wage, I contend that the only thing that matters is wages, because when you aren’t able to pay your basic bills life is a constant shit show.
